Strong Delusion: What Happens When People Refuse the Truth
2 Thessalonians 2:10-11 KJV says:
“And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:”
What Is Strong Delusion?
Strong delusion is one of the most sobering warnings in Scripture. It describes a condition where people become so hardened against the truth that they believe a lie.
The issue is not simply lack of information. The Bible says they “received not the love of the truth.” That means truth was not merely unknown. It was rejected.
⚠️ This is a serious warning.
A person may hear truth, understand truth, be warned by truth, and still refuse to love it. When people repeatedly reject God’s Word, resist conviction, excuse sin, and choose lies that please the flesh, they become vulnerable to deeper deception.
Strong delusion is not ordinary confusion. It is judgment connected to the rejection of truth.
The Love of the Truth Matters
The passage does not only say they rejected truth. It says they did not receive the love of the truth.
That phrase is important.
A person can know Bible facts without loving truth.
A person can hear sermons without loving truth.
A person can debate doctrine without loving truth.
A person can appear religious without loving truth.
💡 To love truth means to receive God’s Word even when it corrects us, humbles us, exposes us, or calls us to repent.
Truth is not always comfortable. Sometimes truth wounds our pride. Sometimes it confronts sin. Sometimes it tells us we are wrong. But the person who loves truth would rather be corrected by God than comforted by a lie.
Proverbs 12:1 KJV says:
“Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.”
A heart that loves truth remains teachable.
A heart that hates correction becomes vulnerable to delusion.
Strong Delusion Comes After Rejected Truth
The warning in 2 Thessalonians is not that people accidentally made a small mistake. The warning is that they refused the truth.
This pattern appears throughout Scripture.
People reject God’s Word.
Then they seek voices that agree with their desires.
Then they become hardened.
Then they believe lies more easily.
Then they may even call evil good and good evil.
Isaiah 5:20 KJV says:
“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
This is what delusion does. It reverses spiritual judgment. What God calls sin begins to look acceptable. What God calls truth begins to look offensive. What God calls holiness begins to look extreme. What God calls deception begins to look enlightened.
Strong delusion is dangerous because the deceived person may feel convinced they are right.
When People Prefer Lies
Many people do not believe lies because there is no truth available. They believe lies because the lie gives them something they want.
A lie may offer:
- Sin without consequence
- Peace without repentance
- Salvation without surrender
- Grace without holiness
- Comfort without conviction
- Spirituality without Christ
- Unity without truth
- Knowledge without obedience
- Freedom without submission to God
This is why false teaching often appeals to human desire.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 KJV says:
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
People may turn away from truth because truth confronts what they want to keep.
👉 A lie becomes attractive when it protects sin.
Signs of Delusion
Delusion may appear when a person:
- Rejects clear Scripture
- Refuses correction
- Calls repentance unnecessary
- Defends sin as freedom
- Treats holiness as legalism
- Chooses teachers who only affirm desire
- Becomes angry at biblical warning
- Trusts signs, feelings, or experiences above Scripture
- Redefines Jesus Christ
- Accepts another gospel
- Confuses popularity with truth
- Believes peace is possible without repentance
The danger is not merely being wrong. Everyone can misunderstand something and need correction.
The danger is refusing correction because the heart no longer wants truth.
God’s Word Is the Protection
The protection against delusion is not intelligence, popularity, emotion, or religious activity. The protection is a humble heart submitted to the Word of God.
Psalm 119:105 KJV says:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
God’s Word gives light where deception brings darkness.
A believer should ask:
- Do I love truth even when it corrects me?
- Am I willing to repent when Scripture exposes sin?
- Do I receive reproof, or do I resent it?
- Am I choosing teachers who tell me what I want to hear?
- Do I test every message by Scripture?
- Do I want God’s truth more than personal comfort?
- Am I holding on to any lie because I do not want to surrender?
These questions are serious because the heart can be deceived.
Conclusion: Do Not Refuse the Truth
2 Thessalonians 2:10-11 KJV says that strong delusion comes upon those who “received not the love of the truth.”

Let Scripture judge every teaching, experience, and desire.
